چکیده
Abstract Compressional Alfvén eigenmodes (CAEs) driven by energetic ions have been observed in magnetic fusion experiments. In this paper, we show that the modes can also be runaway electrons formed post-disruption plasma, which may explain kinetic instabilities DIII-D disruption experiments with massive gas injection. The spatial structure is calculated, as are frequencies agreement experimental observations. Using a electron distribution function obtained from simulation, mode growth rates calculated and found to exceed collisional damping rate when density exceeds threshold value. excitation of CAEs poses new possible approach mitigate seed during current quench surpassing avalanche.

Observation of reversed-shear Alfvén eigenmodes excited by energetic ions in a helical plasma.
Reversed-shear Alfvén eigenmodes were observed for the first time in a helical plasma having negative q₀'' (the curvature of the safety factor q at the zero shear layer). The frequency is swept downward and upward sequentially via the time variation in the maximum of q. The eigenmodes calculated by ideal MHD theory are consistent with the experimental data. The frequency sweeping is mainly dete...
متن کاملRadial localization of toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmodes.
Linear gyrokinetic simulation of fusion plasmas finds a radial localization of the toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) due to the nonperturbative energetic particle (EP) contribution. The EP-driven TAE has a radial mode width much smaller than that predicted by the magnetohydrodynamic theory. The TAE radial position stays around the strongest EP pressure gradients when the EP profile evolves. The...
متن کاملNonlinear excitations of zonal structures by toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes.
Zonal flows and, more generally, zonal structures are known to play important self-regulatory roles in the dynamics of microscopic drift-wave-type turbulences. Since toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) plays crucial roles in the Alfvén wave instabilities in burning fusion plasmas, it is, thus, important to understand and assess the possible roles of zonal flow and structures on the nonlinear dynami...
متن کاملObservation of odd toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes.
Experimental evidence is presented for the existence of the theoretically predicted odd toroidicity induced Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) from the simultaneous appearance of odd and even TAEs in a normal shear discharge of the joint European torus. The modes are observed in low central magnetic shear plasmas created by injecting lower hybrid current drive. A fast ion population was created by applying...
متن کاملRunaway electrons and ITER
The potential for damage, the magnitude of the extrapolation, and the importance of the atypical—incidents that occur once in a thousand shots—make theory and simulation essential for ensuring that relativistic runaway electrons will not prevent ITER from achieving its mission. Most of the theoretical literature on electron runaway assumes magnetic surfaces exist. ITER planning for the avoidanc...
